Goals

Welcome to History 151!

In the comments below, write one thing that you would like to accomplish in this course. Try to be as specific as possible, so instead of “I’d like to get an A,” consider “I’d like to gain more confidence speaking in class” or “I’d like to feel more prepared for final exams.” We’ll work together throughout the semester to encourage each other to meet our goals.

This post will be available for new comments until Friday, September 5.

  1. I've never been a huge fan of American History for some reason. I guess I got a bad taste in my mouth for it when I took it when I was younger. I hope that this college course will be a lot more interesting and I will enjoy most of the information I learn about. I also hope to have some group discussions and meet some new people!

  2. Since the beginning of primary school, I have always enjoyed learning about History. Similar to the previous response, I would like to meet new people and hope to build up my self-assurance in group discussions. I am looking forward to learning new and intriguing things in History 151 as well.

  4. Hello, My name is Katherine Urena. When I was in High School, I always enjoyed US History. I used to give tutoring to some students in a one-to-one meeting. I even thought about pursuing a career as a History professor. After I graduated, I realized I don't like History as a full time career, I just like to read about US History on my free time or when someone suggest me to read a topic about US history. In this course, I hope I can become a better History student and I also want to work on my fear to participate in class. I want to make some friends in this course, since I am new at Hunter and I don't know anyone here.

  5. My hope for this class is to enhance my knowledge on modern American history by building more of a foundation of times that were critical in making American the greatest country ever! It would be nice to enjoy the process though.

  6. Ever since I took my first History class, I realized that it was not my favorite subject. I actually did enjoy learning about different events in the past, but it was more challenging than any other classes. With efforts, I have always been able to achieve my goals in my History classes; however, this semester I hope to gain more confidence with participating in class and not being afraid to have the wrong answer. In addition, I hope to be able to connect the information I learn in this class with other courses to have a better knowledge of how history plays an essential role in the way our society is constructed today. Furthermore, I want to be able to listen to others’ opinions to learn from them; as well as to meet new people since I just transferred to Hunter College from another school.

  7. I have had hard time studying i America, as it showed a completely new language and people. Although, I was determined to do the best I could and achieve the highest goals possible. That is what I am trying to achieve in History 151 class, I am trying to learn as much as possible and reduce that barrier between me and America, its language and people. I hope to learn how to express my thoughts fully in this class, as I love discussions.

  8. My name is Pei Zhen Qu. My goal for this class is to get a better understanding of American history. During high school, I didn't do so well in my US history class. I hope that during this semester, I will be able to participate frequently.

  9. Hi my name is Muhaimin Ali. My goal for this class is to get a better understanding of American History. In high school I did pretty well in my history classes but by now I've probably forgotten a lot of what I've learned in those classes. So hopefully this class helps me remember some things and get a deeper understanding of the material.

  10. Philip McElroy - I have always taken an interest in american history, but I have spent a lot more time reading about post civil war american history than early american history. So I guess my goal for this course is to find what events are most intriguing about this period in time, and then study them further in my own reading.

  11. Hello, my name is Ellen Comitas. I would say since about the sixth or seventh grade I enjoyed learning about history, especially American history. It's a class that I find very informative and interesting and that's why I decided to take it my first semester as a freshman in hunter college. I believe that there is way more to history then we were taught in high school and I can't wait to go deeper into history and discover all the things I don't know. My goal for this course would most definitely be to participate more during class, a lot of the time I have the right answer but refuse to give my answer cause of the fear of it being wrong. I don't know why I get a little nervous like that but I do and my goal for this course is to just participate as much as I can.

  12. I've always disliked history until I came across a Professor who actually made me understand history. I honestly see taking a history class as very important because it allows you to see the differences from then and now, why certain cultures act and do things differently and it also helps you improve your speaking. As a student who is on her path to pursue a bachelor's degree in NeuroBiology, I want to make sure I engage in a variety of classes because they are all very affective in our lives and choices.

  13. During this course I would like to learn more about the history of America and how this country was created. Coming from an European country, my knowledge of American history is limited, and I would like to expand my knowledge and to understand better the concept of colonization. History fascinates me and I find every little detail very important and interesting. I hope to learn as much as possible in this class because we live in this country and, I believe it is very important to know the story behind the creation of this great nation.

  14. Hello, my name is Keo Chau. I have never been too interested in History, but I hope this class can help me broaden my horizons and perhaps even change the way I view this subject. I would like to participate in history hands-on projects and work with my classmates, who I look forward to interacting with.

  15. Hi, I'm Courtney Becker. In this class I would like to gain more confidence on answering questions when my hand isn't raised. I have a fear of being wrong and a lot of the time I question myself on whether I'm right or not. In this history class, I would like to work on my confidence in my own knowledge.

  16. Hello! My name is Emmanuel Maldonado and I would like to gain confidence in this course subject. I really love history, especially Global! However, I'm not a big fan of American History. It's probably because it's always been taught to me in a dull, boring and monotone fashion (You know? Like the Professor from "Bueller's Day Off"). But not here! I see hope! So far I like what I'm experiencing and am really enjoying the class dynamics (The whole structure and what not). I feel like the group discussions really help recap and reiterate what the main idea is... For Example like today's focus revolved around "How did new contact between the Natives and European Settlers influence things like disease, trade and settlement". I feel like the fact that I'm actually learning and having fun at the same time. If this is the true structure of the course, then it's going to be a fun semester!

  17. Hi, My name is Armin Celjaj, I want to major in history and this class is my first stop. I love history, and really enjoy how the class is structure. My goal is to learn new ideals, and point of views of a certain time period. Like how today I learn about how disease ,trade and settlement affect the contact between the Native Americans and the Europeans.

  19. Hello Everyone,
My name is Diana Lee and I am a transfer student from online university. This is my first semester at Hunter College. History 151 is my first American History class. I chose this particular course because I thought it would be very interesting to learn about the country I moved to. English is my second language, which I started to learn only a few years ago. Since I moved here, my whole life has changed. It is the whole new experience in my life. My goal for this course is to be more confidence speaking in class. I think that one way to gain confidence is to gain more knowledge. In my opinion, the more we know the better we are.

  20. Hello, my name is Wallace Law. I am taking this history class with an expectation to revitalize my understanding of American History. I have not taken American History since my junior year of high school, as American Government is a slightly different course. I hope to emerge from this class with and renewed, and possibly deeper understanding of American History from the Colonial Era to the Civil War.

  21. My name is Alexa Andrickson and I am a transfer student from Wagner College in State Island. History, in general, was not a requirement there and I did not have "Core." The last time I took American History was in high school. I am not a fan of American History, but when I took the class, it was definitely fun. I learned plenty of information, but I definitely have some brushing up to do. Hopefully during this course, I will be able to create techniques and easier ways to study and learn the information so I can also apply those techniques to my other classes. I want to expand my knowledge of the subject and feel confident when answering questions or discussing facts about American History. I hope that I do not find a hard time grasping the information.

  22. Hey guys, my name is Andrew Schacht, and with my time in this class I would like to raise. my interest in this area of American history, growing up I'd always preferred studying the 20th century

  23. Hey, my name is Jessie Augustin. When it comes to history it's never really been my cup of tea due to all the date memorization that was required. For this class I enter with hopes of gaining a better outlook on the subject as a whole. Ideally, I hope to leave with a more positive outlook and greater interest on the subject, but we'll see what happens.

  24. I would like to refresh my memory from earlier American history classes as well as learn American history from more of an objective point of view. It was kind of boring just learning facts from a European standpoint repeatedly. I also look forward to leaving this class with more of an interest in American history itself.

  25. Hello everyone! My name is Niara Carrenard and I'm a sophomore. I've always liked history, but I haven't taken too many history courses. During this semester, I would like to work on my overall knowledge of history. Along with that, I would like to improve my shyness and get comfortable with speaking in front of larger groups of people and also having the confidence to do so.

  26. Hi guys! My name is Faiza Farooq and just like most of you guys, I am a freshmen. I've always liked history, to some extent, and it becomes much easier to handle if it is taught in a fun way. I would like to work on my overall note-taking skills and participation in class. I tend to prolong my notes and overwrite more information than I need to; I also tend to get really shy and awkward in classroom where I do not know anybody. I would like to build my confidence and get rid of my timidness.

  28. Hey guys my name is Shaylese Scott and I am a sophomore. I never really had a thing for history up until my junior year in high school when I took AP US history and actually began to both understand and find interest in the context. In this class I hope to develop better reading and note taking skills especially dealing with such a dense text. When reading I have a bad habit of not remembering information thoroughly when its most important, so I'm determined to form a great study plan. I also hope to become more willing and confident to join class discussion when in a class of students I am not familiar with.

  30. In high school all that ever took place in my history classes was that my professor would write down notes on the board, I would copy them down and that would be the end of class. I am really looking forward to more of a discussion oriented class and expanding my knowledge on American history, as well as learning to work well with others in the class.

  31. Hello everyone! My name is Taylor Henne. I feel like in high school, all we ever took was American History. It got extremely repetitive and felt like nothing was truly new to us. That is why I hope that in this course, we can approach the material in new and engaging ways so that we can learn new aspects about the time period. I also hope to be more prepared for the final exam by retaining more and more information incrementally as opposed to having to cram in a whole semester's worth of material into one night.

  32. Hey guys, I'm Sam Sim and my goal for this course to stay on top of the readings and quizzes. I can't lie, even when I'm informed of deadlines way ahead of time, I always seem to complete my work last second. This course lays out all the deadlines already, so I think this is a good chance for me to improve my pace in completing my work. And with a good pace, I hope to thoroughly read the chapters which I think would help me do well in the quizzes and the class overall.

  33. Hi everyone! I'm Anna Parashchak. I guess with this course I'm really interested in learning about the various ethnic and cultural groups that shaped America. I took AP US History back in High School because it was required and I had been really disappointed with the course since it really focused on the Western European settlers and their descendants and not a lot on any other groups, with exception of a few, that helped to shape America. I'm also interested in finding out how different it is to write for History verses something like Philosophy or English.

  34. Hi, my name is Matthew Cheng. I was always interested with my history classes in high school, because my teachers made the class interesting and informative at the same time. One of my goals for this class is to improve on my note taking and studying, because sometimes i cant read my own notes after class, which leads to a lot of problems when i try to study for exams.

  37. Hey everyone my name is Zachary Paul. There are several goals i would like to accomplish this semester in class. First and for most i want to acquire more knowledge of history. I would like to get over my fear of speaking in front of people. I would also like to learn and be able to write a proper research paper. Last and certainly not least my ambition is to be a history teacher so any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

During this semester, one goal I'd like to accomplish is to participate during class everyday because speaking in front of others is one of my personal weaknesses. Also, I would like to get into the habit of reviewing my notes every night in order to be prepared for any class discussions.

  42. Hi! (Sorry if this is a repeat, my original post disappeared when I clicked publish) My name is Kaitlin Warner. I have always loved history especially ancient history. I never had much interest in American history since in my school district we learned American history for 9/12 years of school. I hated learning the same thing over again since unlike the rest of the world, our country only has a few centuries of history. However the one topic I never minded learning twice was the pre industrial era and when I found out that I could take a class on just that time period, I was very excited. I like what we are doing so gar and I can't wait to learn more about this subject.

  43. Hello, my name is Luis Grande.
To be honest, I was never fond of history; the subject didn't interest me, making my experience barren.
This semester my goal is to have a positive attitude towards it and really invest myself in the subject so that even though I have to take it to graduate, I at least have a fruitful semester with it.

  44. Hey everyone! I honestly enjoy learning about history but throughout my pre-College education, I did not like the way History was taught. I always felt it was biased and from the point of view of those in power at the time period being discussed. What opened my eyes to the true importance of history was the book "A people's History of the United States" and its unbiased account of history as it was experienced by the average joe of that time. Which is really important in my opinion. I hope to get from this class the same unbiased and academic point of view on history and hope to reevaluate academically any notions about US history that I might have.

I look forward to examine deeply into the progress of this country like I've never done before.

  49. My name is Christine Kline, I am a transfer student. At my old college I took two world history classes but not any American history classes. I am excited to take a college level American history class so I can go deeper and have a better understanding of the topics we cover. Some of my goals included better note taking, writing successful historical essays, participating in class discussions, and most importantly expanding my knowledge of American history.
